Central African Rebel Commander Faces War Crimes Charges

Mahamat Said, a former leader of militia group in the Central African Republic (CAR), faces 14 charges at the International Criminal Court of war crimes and crimes against humanity. The charges include torture, persecution, enforced disappearance, and cruel treatment.

Prosecutors have accused Said of overseeing a “catalogue of misery” during the CAR’s civil war that escalated in 2013. Said is allegedly a former commander of the Seleka, meaning “alliance” in the Sango language, a rebel coalition made up largely of the CAR’s Muslim minority from northern regions. He is accused of running two detention centers where the crimes are allegedly to have taken place.
