Heavy Security in China and Hong Kong on 35th Anniversary of Tiananmen Crackdown

Ahead of the 35th anniversary of the Tiananmen Massacre, the Chinese government increased security around the perimeter of Beijing’s Tiananmen Square, which was the site of a military crackdown on student-led pro-democracy protests on June 4, 1989. Fleets of police vehicles and checkpoints lined the surrounding area.  

The death toll from that day remains unknown. However, it is suspected that hundreds, if not thousands, were killed in the military operation. Relatives of the victims reportedly remain under close police surveillance, which doubles down ahead of the annual anniversary. As domestic references to the Tiananmen Massacre continue to be subject to widespread censorship, advocates contend that overseas commemorative events are crucial for preserving memories of resistance.
