11/06/2024

Despite calls for peace talks and a ceasefire, the Sudanese army is rejecting calls to de-escalate the fighting in El Fasher. This comes after a conversation on May 28th between General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, during which Blinken reportedly urged for unhindered humanitarian access and an end to the war.

UN officials continue to warn of a “real and growing” risk of genocide in El Fasher. "Civilians are being attacked and killed because of the color of their skin, because of their ethnicity, because of who they are," according to Alice Nderitu, UN special adviser on the prevention of genocide.

At least 14,000 people have been killed in the conflict that erupted in April 2023 between the army and Rapid Support Forces over a transition to free elections. More than 9 million have fled their homes.
