A Libyan court on Tuesday began the trial of deposed leader Muammer Gaddafi’s notorious chief of external intelligence in what is the first test of the interim authorities’ ability to fairly and competently try stalwarts of the former regime.
“One of the big issues is to what extent the Libyan judiciary is able to carry out proper investigations and fair trials,” said Claudio Cordone, programme director at the International Centre for Transitional Justice, an organisation which helps the legal systems of emerging democracies.
