FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Friend:

It is with great pleasure that I present to you our newly released annual report. During the period covered in this report, the International Center for Transitional Justice has undergone profound growth and institutional restructuring in response to an ever increasing demand for our assistance and services. It has been an exciting period to oversee and I am very proud of the extraordinary work that has been accomplished both within our organization and within the field of transitional justice.

From our beginning as a three-person operation in 2001, our staff has grown to a team of more than 100 members working throughout the Americas, Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. We have opened offices in Bogotá, Dili, Jakarta, and Kathmandu, adding to our already established offices in New York (headquarters), Brussels, Cape Town, Geneva, Kinshasa, and Monrovia. These bases help us to maintain a constant presence in the areas of the world in which we work.

As a result of our regionalization process, the ICTJ staff includes a new team of exceptionally experienced regional directors to guide our offices and better organize our growth around the world. Commensurate with the regional refocusing, we have also organized our global staff in thematic teams that contribute specific expertise on each of the transitional justice approaches - prosecutions, truth-seeking, reparations, security systems reform, memorials and museums, gender, and peace and justice. As a result of this reorganization we anticipate projects that are grounded in local realities, and undertaken with strategically engaged partners and stakeholders. We believe that the impact of our work will increase multi-fold.

The broadening and deepening scope of the ICTJ's work underscores how widely applicable transitional justice approaches have become. We could not have come this far without your support and confidence in our abilities; for this we are deeply grateful.

If you have any questions about the Center or our activities, please contact me or Carol Skyrm, Director of Development, at +1 (917) 637-3840 (or cskyrm@ictj.org.)

Sincerely,

Juan E. Méndez
President
