FeaturesDecember 8, 2008 ICTJ Africa Director discusses Eastern Congo on Charlie RoseSuliman Baldo, director of ICTJ's Africa program, participated in a recent panel on PBS's Charlie Rose Show on the crisis in Eastern Congo. Baldo discussed the roots of the current crisis in what he called "the second chapter of the Rwandan genocide," emphasizing that the problem is a regional one that is not unique to the Congo. Baldo said that any first steps toward a solution must address the regional and economic dimensions of the conflict, as both insurgents and the Congolese army are primarily motivated by the possibilities for looting and exploitation of Congo's riches. The episode aired on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008. The other interviewees included Anthony Gambino of USAID and Severine Autesserre, Assistant Professor of Political Science at Barnard College.
