In A Life in Transition, Chairperson Alex Boraine recounts in rich detail the story of his journey from a working-class childhood in Cape Town to a high-profile career as president of the South African Methodist Church, a member of the South African Parliament-where he was an early outspoken opponent of the apartheid government-and deputy chairperson of the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission. In Preventing Genocide: Practical Steps Toward Early Detection and Effective Action, David Hamburg surveys several of the worst genocides of the twentieth century and proposes concrete strategies for addressing their root causes, providing a framework to combat genocide and mass violence before they begin. Counterterrorism: Democracy's Challenge, co-edited by Alexis Keller, is a multidisciplinary collection of essays that investigate terrorism and counterterrorist campaigns of the past and present, as well as the challenges such campaigns pose for democratic states. Samantha Power's Chasing the Flame: Sergio Vieira de Mello and the Fight to Save the World is a biography of the highly-regarded UN official, who was killed in the 2003 bombing of the UN Mission in Iraq. Power draws lessons from Vieira de Mella's life and work about the possibilities of internationalism and role of the United Nations in the 21st century. Ted Sorensen's memoir Counselor: A Life at the Edge of History, centers on Sorensen's personal and professional relationship with President John F. Kennedy, whom he served for 11 years as legislative assistant, speechwriter, and Special Counsel. Counselor provides a unique portrait of the President and the political upheavals of the era. |
