EventsJune 15, 2010 The Rome Statute Review Conference: Prospects for Transitional Justice With and Beyond the International Criminal CourtEU Foreign Policy and Global Governance Forum meeting Tuesday, 15 June 2010, 4:00-5:30pm The European Policy Centre is delighted to invite you to the EU Foreign Policy and Global Governance Forum meeting with David Tolbert, President of International Center for Transitional Justice, on Tuesday, 15 June 2010. In 1998, representatives of 160 states gathered in Rome to create the world’s first permanent international court dealing with war crimes and crimes against humanity. Since then, over half the states in the world have ratified the Rome Statute, which, in turn, has greatly expanded the ICC’s jurisdiction. Despite numerous successes, major challenges remain. To discuss the current state of play and milestones for the future, the first Review Conference on the Rome Statute is being held in Kampala, Uganda, from 31 May to 11 June 2010. Criminal accountability – in which the ICC and domestic prosecutions complement each other – is only the tip of the iceberg. While prosecutions are extremely important, they cannot solve all the demands of societies recovering from mass atrocites and seeking sustainable peace. . Other initiatives beyond the traditional activities of the the ICC are an increasingly important part of the public debate, with the growing role of additional forms of transitional justice being the most striking example. At this Forum meeting – which will be on-the-record – David Tolbert will comment on the policy implications of the Review Conference on the Rome Statute, and will discuss the major issues related to the interplay between criminal accountability and other transitional justice processes. The meeting will be chaired by Rosa Balfour, EPC Senior Policy Analyst. This invitation is being sent to Forum members, the media and selected EPC diplomatic members. We very much hope that you will attend and stay for the reception. Please reply directly to Aleksandra Styś, EPC Programme Assistant, by e-mail to a.stys@epc.eu or by telephone, on 02 286 11 95, to confirm your participation. Please note that seating is limited and that registration will be on a first-come first-served basis. European Policy Centre |
