Three screenings: The Judge and the General

ICTJ is pleased to recommend:

The Judge and the General

A film by Elizabeth Farnsworth & Patricio Lanfranco

From 1974 to 1990, Augusto Pinochet ruled Chile with an iron fist. A decade after his fall, a one-time supporter must rule on the dictator’s crimes.

In 1998, conservative judge Juan Guzmán was appointed by judicial lottery to prosecute the first criminal cases against General Augusto Pinochet, the deposed leader whose regime Guzmán had supported. The Judge and the General follows Guzmán’s descent into what he calls “the abyss” of crimes committed by Pinochet’s government, as he confronts his past collusion with the violent dictator and faces his own doubts about the general’s guilt.
